Cicadas and Dogs

The cicadas are out again (the ones that only come out every 17 years). I remember them from when I was very young. I was under the impression that they were much more widespread than they are! I thought the cicadas came out everywhere:-) It's strange. The ice cream parlor has a special cicada "flavor" and there are commercials for sales at stores in honor of the cicadas. They really creep me out:-P I'm certainly trying to avoid hurting them, but they do scare me. I am not very fond of insects. Our dog, Rasputin, seems really entertained by them, though. He tilts his head and stares at them.

On the topic of dogs, our horrible neighbors' psycho dog was out loose again the very day after the police came. Fortunately, he didn't attack anyone, he was just running up ahead to the owner coming home from work. But still... Those people are not afraid of repercussions. That dog is huge and could kill someone. If that dog does succeed in biting a person, I imagine the owners would be in very big trouble. They have been warned many times. I wish they would move:-P

We had our 17-year cicadas here in 2004. You're right, they're creepy, even though you know they're harmless.

Not sure how intense yours are, but we were absolutely swarmed. The thing that got me about the cicadas was the noise. When you listened to all the thousands of them making their mating calls in the trees at the same time, it sounded almost exactly like phasers from "Star Trek". It was weird.

I remember tons from when I was little, and their shells were absolutely everywhere. They are making sounds and I see them outside all over, but not as much... They just came out a couple days ago, though, so maybe they will be in greater amounts soon.

We had the cicadas I think two summers ago, though I'm not sure. It was really odd as I couldn't remember seeing them before, and my younger brother had never seen them before. They're so huge! Their flight patterns are also very erratic, which I think is what tends to freak people out (it's hard to tell where they're going).

Even just seeming them walk around looks very erratic... They do seem very unpredictable.

They take seventeen years to gestate? I wonder why?!

I have no idea! I still have to look them up. I'll post a few pictures of their shells laying all over my yard.

I lived in Japan as a kid - for 4 years. I was pretty young (age 4 to age 8) but if memory serves there were ALWAYS cicadas, every summer. The idea of having them only every 17 years is new to me (we don't have them at all in England, just bloody noisy crickets out in the countryside). I didn't find the sound creepy at all, it was what lulled me to sleep on hot nights.

The sound doesn't bother me too much, except when I'm outside. Then it actually hurts my ears:-/ I have sensitive hearing.
